Paul Lopez
Dr. Paul López is a professor of Ethnic, Gender, and Queer Studies. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chicana/o Studies from California State University, Northridge; his master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame; and his Ph.D. in Sociology from Northeastern University.
Before joining Chico State, Dr. López taught at Boise State University, the University of San Francisco, the University of California, Santa Barbara, Northeastern University, Northern Essex Community College, and several other institutions.
In 2002, Dr. López was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Center for Chicano Studies at UC Santa Barbara, where he began collecting oral histories of former Mexican braceros. To date, he has collected over 50 oral histories in both California and Michoacán, Mexico. He has published two books on the Bracero Program, including Que Fronteras, now in its second edition.
Dr. López has also served as a historical consultant, appeared in a PBS documentary, and presented his research at conferences across the United States and internationally. His current research explores the experiences of the wives of braceros and the long-term settlement of former guest workers in the United States.
