Matthew T Miller
Matthew Teague Miller is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Program Coordinator for the Musical Theatre BFA at Chico State. He was hired in 2014 as an Assistant Professor in Musical Theatre and was granted accelerated tenure in 2020, earning promotion to Associate Professor. He received his BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and an MFA in Directing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Matthew has been a University Senator since 2016 and currently serves on the Senate Executive Committee as Chair of the Educational Policies and Programs Committee (EPPC). He previously served as Theatre Division Head and Associate Chair of the Department of Music and Theatre, contributing significantly to the growth and development of the program.
Matthew is a former President of the Musical Theatre Educators Alliance, the largest international organization for Musical Theatre educators. He co-hosts the podcast Carefully Taught: Teaching Musical Theatre with Matty and Kikau, which has been cited in major publications including People Magazine, Playbill.com, and BroadwayWorld.com. He has gained national recognition for his focus on inclusive and anti-racist pedagogy and has published articles for the popular theatre website OnStage Blog, including A Professor’s Recipe to Electric Musical Theatre Stage Presence and What is a Theatre Critic’s Actual Job?, both widely adopted as required readings by theatre professors across the country.
As a playwright, Matthew’s original musical revue Give My Regards to Christmas was performed at both Legacy Stage and Festival 56 in 2019. His original musical Burn Ban: A Horror Musical is set to be produced at Legacy Stage in 2025.
In 2024, Matthew was invited to sing in a Broadway chorus with multiple Tony-nominated performers on Aaron Lazar's Grammy-nominated album The Impossible Dream. The ensemble featured Lin-Manuel Miranda, Shoshana Bean, Kristin Chenoweth, Neil Patrick Harris, Sting, Josh Groban, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Brian d'Arcy James, Adam Jacobs, Norm Lewis, Jill Paice, Kate Baldwin, and many others.
As a performer, Matthew is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. His credits include touring with the Broadway production of Les Misérables for three years, performing as part of the original China cast alongside Tony nominees Colm Wilkinson and Carmen Cusack, and appearing in roles such as Oscar in The Odd Couple, Marcellus in The Music Man, and Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
As a director, his work has been seen at Timber Lake Playhouse, Triad Stage UpStage Cabaret, and the George Street Playhouse. He spent five years as Producing Artistic Director of the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, an Equity theatre in Iowa, where he directed the Iowa premieres of Disney’s Newsies and The Bridges of Madison County.
At Chico State, Matthew received the 2022 “Taking it to the Classroom” Conversations on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI) Award for his commitment to anti-racist theatre practices and social justice in theatre.
