Dr. Steve Perez began serving as Chico State’s 13th president on July 1, 2023, following his tenure as interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. A committed champion of student success, he prioritizes building strong, collaborative teams dedicated to advancing the University and strengthening its impact across the region. Before joining Chico State, Dr. Perez served as interim president at San José State University during a pivotal period of transition and held numerous leadership roles at Sacramento State over more than 20 years, including provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, interim dean of the College of Business Administration, faculty athletics representative, and professor of economics. A macroeconomist by training, his teaching and scholarship have spanned econometrics, labor economics, sports economics, and monetary policy, with research published in leading academic journals. Dr. Perez earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, San Diego, and his PhD in economics from the University of California, Davis, and now brings more than two decades of academic leadership and faculty experience to his service at Chico State.
